Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that can be used to detect surface and in the area slightly below the surface (sub-surface) flaws in ferromagnetic materials by using a combination of yoke magnetic field and iron particle to detect flaws in a component. Surface breaking flaws distort the magnetic field causing local “magnetic flux leakage” that attract the iron particle providing a build-up that can be seen visually. It is highly portable and does not need a stringent pre-cleaning operation. It is fast, easy an will through thin coating.
